Why Does Self Care Feel Like a Privilege?

Image
The Internet is rampant with self help gurus spouting the importance of self care rituals. It ’s a fad, one that everyone is hopping on board with, but for good reason! Self indulgence is often referred to as a guilty pleasure, but why do we feel this way? Why do we as a culture, and especially as women, feel bad about treating ourselves well? In a recent poll I conducted online, people were evenly split on the reasons that they were lacking in their self care. Guilt, financial difficulties, and time were the top reasons, followed by motivation. Messages poured in from people expressing their difficulty with feeling like they could afford to treat themselves to the things that would make them feel better. “ Self Care ” is such a broad category that its hard to pin point exactly what it means for each individual. Some people consider vacations, pedicures, massages, new clothes, trips to restaurants and salon visits as a necessary part of their self care regime. Others s...

Tired? Maybe its Moon Madness!

Image
Since the dawn of humanity, we have immortalized the moon. We've assigned it genders, names, meanings, and emotions. We've prayed to it, worshipped it, romanticized it. Many of us base our ritual work, and even our spiritual lives around the moon and its cycles. Historically we've blamed any number of mental health issues on the full moon, and even now police and hospitals carry an expectation of some pretty crazy cases walking through their doors during that time.  While I am an amateur moon fanatic, many people I talked to recently (pagan or otherwise) had a few common things to say about how they felt during the first day or two leading up to the full moon through the few days after. One is that they are tired, exhausted, drained of all energy. The other is that they felt anxious, agitated, keyed up and bursting at the seams with the drive to create and then, afterwords, fall into an exhausted sleep.  How can so many pe...

Blue Moon and Upcoming Pours

Blue Moon Magick Simply put, Blue Moons are full moons that occur twice in one month. You may have seen or heard the hubbub of the one we just came off of in January. If you feel you've missed it, never fear! Another is approaching on March 31st. If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have seen my posts about the Blue Moon candle pour I did, which sold out pretty quickly, created with the intention of connecting with your ancestors or spirit guides. Though I will be doing another pour for the March 31st blue moon, I wanted to share my recipe with you all to make if you so desire. This recipe is for a soy version, but any wax can be substituted. Your results may vary with how the herbs and wax settles depending on what kind you use. Heat your wax(1lb or 2lbs works best) in a double boiler at low/medium heat until it reaches approximately 125 degrees. You can use a Pyrex dish inside of a pot of water, or a metal pot within a larger pot if you don't have a p...
